Ship of Theseus
If every part is replaced, is it still the same object?
A ship is repaired by replacing its wooden planks one at a time. Eventually, none of the original planks remain. Is it still the original ship? If the old planks are used to build a second ship, which ship is the original? The problem asks whether an object’s identity depends on its material, its structure, or its continuous history.
A crystal sculpture can keep a recognisable wire-frame shape while new crystals grow over it. This offers a physical way to explore how an object can change while retaining its identity.
